"Igor Zanegin: a few words on how to become the best in Russia" (portal "Youth Smolensk", April 2015)
Some time ago I, like many of Smolyan, recognize the brilliant victory of Igor Zanegina, second-year student of a magistracy of branch of Moscow power engineering Institute in Smolensk, in the VI national contest of student projects on hydropower, "Energy development".
The event is organized by the group "RusHydro" — the leader in energy production, developing generation on the basis of energy of water flows, tidal, wind and geothermal energy. This event was a great occasion for my meeting with Igor, where we talked about the project, the competition and the taste of victory.
Igor, Hello! You just won the competition of student projects "Energy of development. How did you hear about this contest?
The offer to participate in this competition I received from my academic supervisor – sen'kov Aleksey Viktorovich. The Institute for information about the contest was spread by the Deputy Director of the branch for research – M. I. DLI.
You submitted the job in the direction of "Security". Why did you choose it?
It's simple. Now I'm working on a master's thesis, which is based on the direction of "Security". And at the competition I decided to submit something good.
Tell me, please, what is the essence of your project?
The correspondence stage of the contest was submitted academic work: "Models and methods for monitoring complex risks in hydraulic structures". Here was the proposed ideas, providing help in the investigation of accidents, incidents and accidents at hydraulic structures.
During the full-time protection proposed to solve one of the "RusHydro" tasks. I chose the task for predicting failures and making a decision about sending it out for maintenance and repair. The proposed solution was based on the technical achievements in the field of fuzzy logic, which were made in the computer science Department. The decision allowed not only to consider the statistics of failures and performance of equipment, but also rely on the opinion of expert-system owner, which is expressed in vague and imprecise values, poorly amenable to formalization.
How long have you worked on your project?
As in the first work, was research conducted in the framework of my master thesis, I took only 1.5 months for slow execution and completions of project details. But to prepare for final stage of the competition, I had only one week.
Tell me, while you receive support from her Department and from the Institute? What do you think, how important is it for a young scientist?
Of course, an invaluable contribution to my successful participation in the competition has contributed to my scientific supervisor – A. V. Senkov, He constantly advised me, gave valuable advice and direct thoughts in the right direction. The Department is also not left behind. During the preparation to the final stage of the competition helped me Professor of the University Vadim Borisov. I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported and helped me throughout the competition and preparation for it.
And, Yes, for young scientists the support of experienced specialists from the Institute is necessary.
And you previously participated in similar competitions?
No, this is my first participation and I won! It's great!
Please, share your impressions, emotions. What gives participation in such events?
The contest lived up to my expectations. The organization of the event was at the highest level. In addition to the competition for us – the participants organized a cultural programme. It was interesting to talk with the other contestants who came from different cities of our country. I believe that participation in such events gives you the opportunity to test your skills in a real business, and communicate with professional experts and discuss with them the issue of practical applicability of the projects. And, of course, participation in this contest allows you to improve your technical knowledge.
Do you think that helped you become the best in the contest?
First, a serious preparation for the final stage of the competition. Despite the fact that the time allotted a little, I tried to use it effectively. Secondly, the competition I tried to show leadership and to successfully work in a team: I fully take responsibility for the entire command result.
Igor, tell, finally, what the award went to the winner?
I was given a tablet, and my thesis Advisor — an external battery. The organizers of the competition with my desire to help with further employment.
In the "Energy development" every year, attended by many students from various Russian universities. How do you feel being a leader?
I must admit that it's great! Comes the realization that all is not in vain. Getting more confidence. And, of course, such a victory stimulates new achievements in the scientific field.
What is the future of your project? Whether its implementation?
An important point of any research work is its practical applicability. Of course, I plan to implement your project, but at the moment the main priority for me is finishing work on his master's thesis and its defence.
Do you think that energy experts give many opportunities to prove themselves in the scientific field?
Experienced faculty our Institute is doing quite a lot for students to realize their academic ambitions. Then it all depends on the student. If he is interested in a certain area of research, and he is ready to give her sufficient time, then he has every chance to prove themselves in the scientific field.
Igor, what are your plans for the future, because you this year has done graduate work?
I plan to continue scientific work and to go to graduate school of our Institute. As for the employment issue, I would like to find a job in a serious company where I can realize their professional ambitions.
And finally, what advice can you give those who want to engage in research and follow in your footsteps?
First, choose the area of research you're interested in. Second, always take the initiative in research activities: publish articles and participate in contests. Do not think that everything will come by itself, every success is hard work.
